United Hospital awarded national honors for cancer program
“Less than 25 percent of all treatment centers receive distinguished designation.”
(St. Paul, MN – December 12, 2005)The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons has awarded the Cancer Care Services Program at United Hospital with a three-year approval with commendation. Only 25 percent of all hospitals in the United States have cancer programs approved by the CoC, yet 80 percent of newly diagnosed cancer patients are treated in these institutions.
“I am honored by this remarkable achievement of obtaining the highest possible rating,” said David Miller, vice president, Operations, United Hospital. “Not only were United Hospital’s scores for every standard at the highest level, but there were no deficiencies and we received commendation in five areas. This shows we are truly living up to our mission of providing the best quality care in the communities we serve.”
For more than 80 years, the Commission on Cancer (CoC) has been working to reduce the morbidity and mortality of cancer through education, standard-setting and monitoring the quality of cancer care. Receiving care at a CoC-Approved Cancer Program ensures patients will have access to:
comprehensive care, including a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment
a multispecialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
access to cancer-related information, education and support
a cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results and offers lifelong patient follow-up
ongoing monitoring and improvement of care
quality care, close to home.
The American Cancer Society estimates more than 1.3 million cases of cancer will be diagnosed this year. There are currently more than 1,400 CoC approved cancer programs in the United States and Puerto Rico, representing close to 25 percent of all hospitals.
