Health Care Serve & Observe Experience program

In addition to our regular college volunteer program, we offer the Health Care Serve & Observe Experience program (SOE). The SOE volunteers gain valuable experience while participating in the rewarding opportunity to job shadow a health care professional, including:

  • Physician
  • Nurse
  • Medical Imaging
  • Physical Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Lab

Earn college credit

It may be possible for the SOE volunteer to earn college credit for this experience. It is each student’s responsibility to coordinate all details with his/her college for college credit.

Schedule


School Year Term

  • One semester in length, minimum of 6 hours/week for the semester or based upon college credits student is seeking (40-160 hours)

  • Participate in two 3-hour shadow experiences/semester

January Term

  • Three weeks in length, minimum of 21 hours/week
  • Participate in two 3-hour shadow experiences/semester

Summer Term

  • May 27-August 15
  • One semester in length, minimum of 6 hours/week for the semester or based upon college credits student is seeking (40-160 hours)
  • Participate in two 3-hour shadow experiences/semester
  • Application deadline April 15, 2008

    Guest Services

    • Lobby
    • Guest Lounges
    • Patient Escort
    • Flowers
    • Gift Shop
    • Starbuck’sŪ Coffee Cart
    • Emergency Department

    Patient Services

    • Nursing unit
    • Post-anesthesia Care Unit
    • Day Surgery Center

    Support Services

    • Copy Center
    • Special Projects


    Space is very limited, so apply early.


    How to apply

    Please choose one of the following options:

    • Access an application online. Be sure to indicate that you want to participate inthe SOE program on the application.
    • Call our application phone line at 651-241-4576 to have an application sent to you.
    • Volunteers must:
      • complete an application, which includes references and MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) documentation
      • have a tuberculosis screening test before your start date — this can be completed at United Hospital (no charge) or by your physician
