Paramedics

Allina Medical Transportation hires paramedics to work throughout its primary service area.

Schedules

  • Part-time employees work less than 40 hours per week.
  • Schedules are bid on by seniority according to our staffing rules, which were developed with union leadership.
  • After initial training, new hires are slotted into vacant shifts or fill in for sick calls, vacations, etc.
  • We do not hire summer temporaries or exclusively for weekends.

Pay and benefits

  • In 2004, the starting rate of pay for all new paramedics is $15.60.
  • Employees scheduled for 20 hours per week on the system are eligible for benefits.
  • Benefits begin the first day of the month following hire date.

Hiring process and requirements
Paramedics are hired and trained in groups.

  • When a hiring is announced, the position is posted for application acceptance for 10 days. Applications received outside of this timeframe are held on file for up to six months for review at the next hiring.
  • The hiring process begins with a ranking of applicants based on experience in emergency medical services.
  • Qualified candidates are scheduled for a practical skills exam. The exam consists of two scenarios: being a “team leader” for one and a “partner” for another.
  • A 30-minute personal interview is often scheduled the same day as the practical skills exam.

Candidates also must pass a criminal background check, a driver's license check, employment verification, education verification, a physical exam with Occupational Health, and a physical agility test.

Orientation and training
All candidates who are offered a position (including part-time) must successfully complete the Allina Medical Transportation Academy. This orientation and training program typically begins during the first two weeks of employment, Monday through Friday.

  • The Academy's classroom portion includes orientation to Allina Medical Transportation protocols, a skills review, and training related to hazardous materials, mass casualty incidents and ambulance driving.
  • After classroom training, newly hired paramedics work with a field trainer.
  • After completing shifts with a field trainer, each newly hired paramedic works about five to six months on probation with paramedics who have completed their probationary periods.

Please note that this page provides general answers to common questions about this position. Details may be subject to change, particularly in regard to training and orientation.
