After a person has suffered a stroke and their medical condition has stabilized, that person may be suitable for comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation. We work closely with the neurological and neurosurgical teams at the Minneapolis Neuroscience Institute, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, and the John Nasseff Neuroscience Institute at United Hospital to identify early those patients who would benefit from an inpatient stay at our rehabilitation centers. We receive referrals from hospitals throughout the state of Minnesota.
Nationally recognized for stroke specialty program
The Institute's stroke specialty program at Abbott Northwestern and United hospitals is the only such program in the Twin Cities area accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), an independent national organization that certifies facilities which meet the highest patient care standards. This means that we follow rigorous CARF guidelines for best practice quality and conform to nationally and internationally recognized service standards.
Stroke Services
A real life treatment environment that allows patients to:
practice car transfers with a real car
move about in a simulated store
carry out simple kitchen chores in a real kitchen
test out daily life situations in an apartment prior to discharge
an interdisciplinary treatment team
an individualized care plan that involves the patient and family
Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute also offers a stroke peer group in which former stroke patients volunteer to visit current stroke patients at Abbott Northwestern and United hospitals. The role of the peer visitor is to share their experience with having a stroke, listen to a patient’s concerns and provide support.
Patient Outcomes
Stroke patients can vary greatly in the severity of their stroke. However, on average a stroke patient admitted to our inpatient rehabilitation program is discharged after 15 days and 73 percent of our patients go home!
After discharge, we make sure that you continue to get the services you need. We follow up with our patients at three months post discharge. Therapy may continue through our Outpatient Services or through our Home Health Services.
