Brain Injury Program

Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute offers a wide spectrum of services for people who have had either a traumatic or a nontraumatic brain injury. A patient, for example, may have had an accident and hit her or his head, or the person may be suffering from a brain tumor. We provide consistent, comprehensive rehabilitation in an environment that can be adjusted to meet each patient’s unique needs and level of ability.

Inpatient rehabilitation

This program is goal-oriented with a focus on optimizing recovery and improving a patient's functional living skills. An interdisciplinary team works with the patient and caregiver to develop a plan of care. Team members include a physiatrist, occupational and physical therapists, nursing, speech-language pathologist, social worker, therapeutic recreation specialist and a neuropsychologist.

Outpatient Rehabilitation

Services that are available to inpatients are also available on an outpatient basis, for those patients who have the ability to live at home. These services include occupational and physical therapy, speech-language pathology, neuropsychology, social services and vocational services.

Brain Injury Clinic

The Brain Injury Clinic is an outpatient multidisciplinary program for persons 17 years and older with mild to moderate brain injuries, or non-progressive brain illnesses. Patients are seen by a team of professionals, and a treatment plan is developed.

Some of the more common problems that people with brain injuries face are poor memory, lack of concentration, communication difficulties and lack of organizational skills. Compensating for these deficits is a major goal for patients so that they may resume work or meaningful productive activity.

Another major focus of the Brain Injury Clinic is to help people with their work situation. We work closely with the Vocational Services Department for evaluation, counseling and placement.

Vocational Services

Vocational Services is for outpatients who are interested in returning to work. Services include vocational evaluation, counseling, employment readiness, employment search group and work support groups.

During the past year, 83.5percent of patients who were treated in our brain injury program were discharged directly back into the community
