Phillips Eye Institute’s Low Vision Devices offers many devices that can make life
easier for persons with low vision.
Reading aids: Hand-held magnifiers, with and without built-in lights, fit
in your pocket or purse and are useful for reading labels and price tags when
shopping, reading menus in a restaurant or reading bills or bank statements. Adjustable
floor lamps and full-spectrum light bulbs provide correct illumination for reading.
Closed circuit reading machines - resembling a television - also improve one’s
ability to read and write.
Hobby assistance: “Super jumbo” playing cards help keep you in the game.
Hands-free magnifiers help with sewing, crafts or basic repairs around the house.
There are also “self-threading” sewing needles for machine or hand sewing.
Glare control: Glare-control glasses can fit over your regular glasses
or slip in behind them to shield uncomfortable glare that comes in from the top
or sides of ordinary sunglasses.
