Phillips Eye Institute’s Low Vision Devices offers many devices that can make life easier for persons with low vision.

Reading aids: Hand-held magnifiers, with and without built-in lights, fit in your pocket or purse and are useful for reading labels and price tags when shopping, reading menus in a restaurant or reading bills or bank statements. Adjustable floor lamps and full-spectrum light bulbs provide correct illumination for reading. Closed circuit reading machines - resembling a television - also improve one’s ability to read and write.

Hobby assistance: “Super jumbo” playing cards help keep you in the game. Hands-free magnifiers help with sewing, crafts or basic repairs around the house. There are also “self-threading” sewing needles for machine or hand sewing.

Glare control: Glare-control glasses can fit over your regular glasses or slip in behind them to shield uncomfortable glare that comes in from the top or sides of ordinary sunglasses.

The Minnesota Low Vision Store is another helpful resource recommended by Phillips Eye Institute.
