Abbott Northwestern and Mercy Hospitals Ranked Among America’s Best Hospitals
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn 07/17/2002--
[<b><i>]Congratulations to Abbott Northwestern Hospital
and to Mercy Hospital for being ranked among America’s best
hospitals in U.S. News & World Report![</b></i>
] The magazine ranked the nation’s top 205 hospitals and medical
centers, which they whittled down from 6,045, in 17 specialties.
Abbott Northwestern was the only Twin Cities hospital ranked
among the top 50 in each of these following specialties: heart and
heart surgery (26); hormonal disorders (35); urology (36); ear, nose
and throat (38); neurology and neurosurgery (44); and digestive
disorders (45).
Mercy Hospital ranked 29th in respiratory disorders. Mayo Clinic
and Johns Hopkins led the respiratory care list. Hennepin County
Medical Center (46) was the only other Twin Cities hospital ranked in
this category.
According to U.S. News & World Report, ranked hospitals tend
to adhere more closely to advanced treatment guidelines, to
incorporate new findings into patient care, and to conduct research
that gives desperately ill patients more options. In 13 of the 17
specialties ranked, a hospital had to meet one of three standards to
be considered: membership in the Council of Teaching Hospitals,
affiliation with a medical school, or availability of at least nine
of 17 specified items of medical technology. In each specialty, a
hospital must perform a given number of procedures or had to be cited
by at least one physician in the past three years of U.S. News
Surveys. [Surveys have been done by the magazine for 13 years.]
Hospitals then receive a score that equally weighs reputation,
mortality and a group of care-related factors such as nursing. U.S.
News & World Report cautions that while these rankings should not
be taken as the final word, they offer a good place to start the
search for the level of care you or loved one deserve when it is most
needed.
