Abbott Northwestern named one of 'America's Best Hospitals' by U.S. News & World Report

MINNEAPOLIS 07/11/2008--U.S. News & World Report today released its annual ranking of "America's Best Hospitals." Once again, Abbott Northwestern Hospital made the cut, ranking in six categories where hospital quality is measured by reputation, mortality data and other care related factors:

  • #26 in endocrinology
  • #31 in gastrointestinal disorders
  • #35 in neurology and neurosurgery
  • #37 in orthopedics
  • #47 in gynecology
  • #48 in geriatric care

This is the 19th year U.S. News & World Report has published the list, which identifies hospitals that excel at treating serious illnesses using complex procedures and the latest technology. Only 170 of the 5,544 medical centers evaluated nationwide met the standards for excellence necessary to be included.

"The patient who truly needs outstanding care is the target of the annual U.S. News Best Hospital rankings," said Avery Comarow of U.S. News & World Report.

"These rankings are a testament to our talented, dedicated physicians and employees, who deliver exceptional care to every patient, regardless of how complex or serious their condition," said Jeff Peterson, Abbott Northwestern's president. "Our employees work hard to build our reputation as one of the country's best hospitals, so it is nice to see their work recognized."

'America's Best Hospitals' eligibility

To be considered for "America's Best Hospitals" ranking, a hospital must either be a teaching hospital or affiliated with a teaching hospital, or have at least six important medical technologies from a defined list of 13.

Each specialty then has its own eligibility requirements. To be eligible, the hospital had to either have at least a specified volume in certain procedures and conditions over three years, or had to have been nominated in U.S. News' yearly specialist survey. Hospitals that meet these criteria are then ranked based on reputation, mortality data and factors like nurse staffing and technology.
