Allina's United Hospital awarded nursing excellence honor
ST. PAUL, Minn. 04/21/2009--Allina's United Hospital has been honored with The American Nurses Credentialing Center MAGNET® Recognition Program status, making it one of fewer than five percent of all U.S. hospitals and one of just eight in Minnesota that have been designated a MAGNET facility. The award is the highest level of recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and is valid for four years.
"We are very proud of our nurses and this honor is recognition of the high standard to which they hold themselves," said Jeff Wicklander, United Hospital vice president for patient care. "It recognizes the excellence of the work our nurses do each day and reflects the commitment of our entire staff to serve as a team, providing the highest quality care possible for the people of our community."
The MAGNET Recognition Program, established by the ANCC, recognizes health care organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing practice and adherence to national standards for the organization and delivery of nursing services. According to the ANCC, health care consumers have more confidence in the overall quality of a hospital if it has achieved the level of excellence established by the MAGNET Recognition Program.
MAGNET designated facilities consistently outperform other facilities in recruiting and retaining nurses resulting in increased stability in patient care and patient satisfaction. Because quality nursing is one of the most important factors in enlisting high caliber physicians and specialists, MAGNET status becomes an attractive force that extends to the entire facility.
"This has been an arduous but rewarding journey as we examined every facet of care we deliver at United," Tomi Ryba, United Hospital president, said. "The result is a demonstration to our patients, employees, physicians, volunteers, community members, and current and future nurses of our commitment to quality."
During the rigorous review process required to achieve MAGNET status, a hospital must document that it is committed to sustaining nursing excellence, improving professional practice and transforming the culture of a work environment. United Hospital submitted a 1,700-plus-page document and the review process concluded with a four day site visit in January. During the site visit, a team of appraisers from the ANCC observed nursing practice in action, making certain that day-to-day performance measured up to the standards set by the ANCC.
