Lasers in Medicine

The surgical laser allows specially trained surgeons to access the most remote areas of the body, through tiny incisions or sometimes no incision at all.

Compared to conventional surgery, laser surgery can mean less pain, less blood loss, less time in the hospital. It also means reduced scarring and recuperation time.

Some laser procedures have been performed for more than 20 years to treat conditions like endometriosis in women. Newer developments like photodynamic therapy for certain types of cancer has been more recently improved medicine in the United States.

At Abbott Northwestern Hospital, more than 15 different lasers in use by specialists in these and other areas:

  • general surgery
  • gynecology
  • urology
  • orthopedics
  • ear, nose, and throat

Because of our pioneering use of lasers, Abbott Northwestern Hospital continues to offer patients more choices for their medical care.
