Classroom-Based Training Programs

Train to Work (TTW) is a two or four-week training course that prepares you for a career opportunity in the healthcare or finance fields.

  • It’s free and it pays! Classes are at no cost to you and en educational grant is provided to those who successfully graduate.
  • Begin your job search right in the classroom. You’ll learn what employers are looking for, how to write a resume, perfect a job applications, do internet job searches, how to interview, workplace expectations and much more.

Class schedules and requirements vary; below are a few class descriptions:

  1. Clerical/Administrative Assistant/EHR: Advance your clerical knowledge for the medical field. Learn medical terminology, brush up on patient care, and enhance your computer skills. EHR classes will offer 16 hours of hands-on Electronic Health Records training.
  2. Work readiness for healthcare:Learn employment skills for entry level jobs in healthcare, such as environmental services and nutritional services work.
  3. Certified Nursing Assistant: This course is for CNA certified individuals that are in good standing on the Minnesota Registry. Prepare for CNA work in a hospital environment while gaining new skills, such as conflict resolution and medical terminology.
  4. Banking: This course prepares you for banking positions such as teller, proof clerk and credit assessor.

Train to Work cannot accept individuals with theft, assault or drug charges on their record.

Education for Life (EFL) provides people living with HIV/AIDS the opportunity to explore returning to work. This is a 5-week class that offers a non-judgmental and confidential environment with knowledgeable staff. Class is at no cost to you and an educational grant is provided to all successful graduates. Benefits counseling provided by Minnesota Work Incentives Connection will help you understand how returning to work could impact your healthcare or financial benefits.

For more information and how to apply for TTW or EFL:

  • Come to an Information Session at the PPL Learning Center, held every Monday promptly at 9 am (no appointment needed). This is mandatory if wanting to apply for training program.

Computer Access Labs and Workshops

Open to everyone, PPL’s computer access lab and workshops, allow you to do online job searches, resume building, set-up your own email account, submit job applications online and more.

Basic terms and functions use a mouse and navigate the keyboard

Computer Basics 2

Save and print files, Work formatting tools such as bold and bullets

Computer Basics 3

Navigate web pages, send email and attach documents

Excel

Create a spreadsheet and basic formulas

Job Search

Job search tips and tricks including preparation, tools, networking and how to use some of the most popular job search sites.

Resume and Cover Letter

Create a powerful resume and cover letter; class will focus on format, content and “do’s” and “don’ts”

Career and Education Advancement

Career Assessment and Exploration

PPL provides one-to-one career coaching and job exploration to help individuals achieve their higher educational goals and move forward on career opportunities, and develop strategies for securing job promotions.

PPL’s College Prep Course

Develop the skills and confidence to take the ACCUPLACER college placement test. PPL’s College Prep Class offers adult learners:

  • College entrance exam preparation
  • Understand financial aid and how to apply
  • One-to-one support to achieve learning goals
  • Learn how college systems work
  • Refresh your skills in math, reading and writing at your own pace
  • Weekly specialty classes with topics such as study skills, financial aid resources, and organizing strategies

Financial Coaching

Work on-to-one with a financial coach to look at ways to increase your earnings and income, reduce financial transaction costs, and generate new wealth through personalized goal plans.
