Radiation Oncology

Approximately 50 to 60 percent of cancer patients are treated with radiation therapy at some time during their disease. The Virginia Piper Cancer Institute's Radiation Oncology Department merges superior technical capabilities with a staff of radiation oncologists, medical radiation physicists, radiation therapists and radiation oncology nurses.

Sophisticated equipment and treatment techniques treat even the rarest types of cancer, relieve adverse symptoms and improve quality of life. In addition, highly accurate state-of-the-art equipment lets staff members tailor each patient’s treatment. Patients have access to many special procedures and have all their treatment at Abbott Northwestern.

Abbott Northwestern's Radiation Oncology Department has been a leader in specialized services for over a decade. We are:

  • the first Minnesota center to treat patients with intensity modulated radiation therapy;
  • one of three centers in Minnesota to use high dose rate brachytherapy
  • one of a handful of centers in Minnesota to use stereotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapy.

The Radiation Oncology Department also offers standard treatments including 3-D conformal radiation therapy, prostate seed implants and the ultrasound technology called B-mode acquisition targeting, which improves the treatment of prostate cancer.

Additionally, the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute has begun using a new treatment for patients suffering from a certain type of liver cancer. Click here to read more about the use of Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) and is microspheres (SIRŪ - Spheres).
